More and more of us are changing our shopping habits, opting for budget supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl in favour of the traditional retailers Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco.

The latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel show Aldi is currently the fifth most popular supermarket in the UK, ahead of the Co-op, while Lidl is only a little behind Waitrose in eighth place.

And the German retailer, which opened its first UK supermarket in Birmingham some 26 years ago, is set to re-open in Great Barr after a huge renovation.

The supermarket, situated on Birmingham Road, will officially reopen on Thursday, September 21 after a six-week store closure, reports the Great Barr Observer.

The supermarket near the Scott Arms has been closed since August 14.

A spokesman for Aldi said: "Aldi Great Barr has been successfully trading since 2004.

"Due to the success of the store it is now being extended and car parking increased for the benefit of customers and staff."

As part of the refurbishment, the car park will be resurfaced and landscaped, with new LED lighting installed, and the store extension will provide room for a fifth aisle in the store to give more room for customer circulation.

An additional checkout will also be installed and, on the shop floor the ceiling will be replaced, the lighting upgraded to LED's and the refrigeration cabinets and freezers will all be replaced.

The shop floor will be overlaid in new terrazzo flooring tile, a new packing shelf and warehouse door will be installed, the welfare block will be renovated and extended, and a new meeting room built.

The staff canteen and office will be refitted and redecorated including new ceilings, too.
